Misuse of the Term "Haute Couture" and the Real Meaning

"those companies mentioned on the list drawn up each year by a commission domiciled at the Ministry for Industry are entitled to avail themselves"

While coming across some Red Carpet award show footage, I've heard an array of celebrities gushing over their attire. This is where we include a huge *GASP*, as I've heard the misuse of "Haute Couture" from far to many souls. Luckily,  for all of you so called fashion pioneers out there? I'll set the record straight and maybe you'll learn something

"Haute Couture" is indeed a French term,  but the first "couturier" was in fact English born.
Charles Frederick Worth (1826-1895) the father of Haute Couture created "The House of Worth" and I won't get into too much general discussion about fashion houses, but if you follow my links? You should catch on quickly.

Strict Rules? These Apply for Fashion Houses/Couture Houses:

  • Design made-to-order for private clients, with one or more fittings.
  • Have a Atelier (workshop) in Paris with at least 15 full time employees.
  • Must have 20 full time technical people in at least one atelier or workshop.
  • Each season ( 2 times per year), present a collection to the Paris press, comprising at least thirty-five runs with outfits for both daytime and  evening wear.

  • Christian Dior
  • Anne Valérie Hash
  • Maurizio Galante

Quick and simple? Now, if you believe that a designer was left out feel free share your advice.

Peace and Love,
